About the Neighbourhood Plan

History of the Sherborne St John Neighbourhood Plan

On 18 May 2017, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council made the Sherborne St John Neighbourhood Plan, which was supported by over 58% of residents in a parish referendum. This plan put the council in a strong position to ensure that planning decisions aligned with the local priorities outlined in the plan. It is now necessary to update the plan to reflect current national and local policies.

Details of the current Made Neighbourhood Plan and supporting documents can be viewed on Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s website here.

About the Neighbourhood Plan Review

There is no statutory requirement to review a Neighbourhood Plan. Sherborne St John Parish Council took the decision to update its Neighbourhood Plan in July 2022 following the loss of Basingstoke and Deane’s five year supply and as result of a number of changes locally and nationally following the adoption of the Original Neighbourhood Plan in 2017.

A questionnaire was held in relation to the Neighbourhood Plan Review between November 2022 and January 2023. This sought the views of the community in relation to a number of aspects, including what people like about living in Sherborne St John and sought views on a number of possible policy areas including Local Green Spaces and Local Gap policy.

The purpose of the Neighbourhood Plan Review is to provide a relevant and up-to-date framework for Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to consider planning applications in the parish. While Neighbourhood Plans cannot restrict development, the existing plan has helped prevent some inappropriate proposals from coming forward.

A public consultation open evening will be held on the Neighbourhood Plan on Friday 6th October 2023 at the Sherborne St John Village Hall. At this event you will have the opportunity to learn more about the plan and offer your comments and suggestions.

The Modified Neighbourhood Plan and supporting documents can be viewed or downloaded online. Reference/hard copies of the Neighbourhood Plan and evidence base, as well as paper copies of the response form, are available to view at:
